In RSU 5,  we use a comprehensive literacy framework for teaching writing as our teachers help students to become critical thinkers, independent problem solvers, self-monitors, self-evaluators, and goal setters.  Students become literate by engaging in meaningful, authentic literacy events such as reading and talking about books or writing for real world purposes and audiences. This is accomplished in our classrooms through demonstration, practice, celebration and assessment across a variety of whole group, small group, and individual learning situations.
